The Project and Fundraising

WHAT ARE WE PLANNING TO DO?

The Ballet of the Nations will be the first theatrical performance of Vernon Lee’s satire of the First World War. The Ballet will be performed in three locations around the Villa il Palmerino, Florence, Vernon Lee’s home for over forty years. Using arial artists, dancers, actors, and a unique film and soundscape, this performance will create an immersive experience for our audience.

WHERE DID THIS PROJECT COME FROM?

The Ballet of the Nations was written after the sudden, and shocking collapse of a long period of peace that had prevailed in Europe for 43 years. It had been a highly optimistic time in which national rivalries that had long torn Europe seemed to be replaced by new forms of international understanding and organisation. These are themes that are becoming relevant once more, and we would like to use The Ballet to promote critical thinking, and harmony in these times.

WHY DO WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT?

The Ballet of the Nations will be performed at Palmerino in May 2019, with the premier on May 31 being shown as part of the ‘Vernon Lee 2019: An Anniversary Conference’ and a reply on the 1th June. We then will have another run with three more dates in September 2019, with the same core cast of ‘Satan’, an actor, ‘Ballet Master Death’, an actor and dancer, and three arial artists who will play Lee’s ‘Nations. Yet our aim is to take the performance and cast to Europe and beyond, designing site specific performances that will include our cast as well as 12 non-professional participants from the local community as the ‘Orchestra of the Passions’. Each performance, directed by Angeliki Papoulia, will challenge the rise in nationalism, and promote human values, education and inclusivity. To realise our ambitions, we need your help. Your donations will assist us to take the next step in the production process by supporting the technical expenses, cost of travel and artiste’s fees. We hope that you can help us!
